Résumé : | Background: The post-conscious is an imaginary state of consciousness that convinces the mind to do the job that it intends to do solely to overcome the conflict between the conscious and the unconscious. The role of the post-conscious in controlling the behaviors and thinking processes among elderly subjects is unknown and needs to be elucidated because elderly people lose many psychological mechanisms enabling them to cope with their new life. Aim To determine the role of the post-conscious among elderly subjects. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 113 participants from 15 countries. All the participants were included in the study regardless of health state and chronic illness. The focus was on their mental health, which was required to be intact, and they were to be fully aware of what we were asking. The questionnaire that was used was tested for reliability and validity. Results: The mean age was 76, ranging from 70 to 90 years. The percentage of people who said that they 'felt the need' to do the wrong thing was 62.9 %. A very large percentage of them (95.57 %) said that they stopped doing the wrong thing when their minds told them it was wrong. With age, psychological problems that can arise because of the conflict between guilt and the need to act become less prominent, which could explain why the majority of respondents (88.5 %) answered 'maybe'. Conclusion: The post-conscious is a limited state that can be less prominent among elderly people. It may lead to actions that go against its prime function. Thoughts and ideas can change in old age and some of them may disappear and be replaced by new ideas, possibly explaining certain unusual behaviors at this stage in life. [résumé d'auteur] |
